When public data disappears

“A website's data disappeared.” Recover removed or quietly altered public data — and preserve it before it's gone for good.

Since 2025, federal and state agencies have removed, restricted, or quietly edited hundreds of public datasets. If a page you relied on is gone — or you suspect the numbers changed — we can help: recovering data from web archives and caches, comparing versions to document what was altered, and preserving a citable copy so your reporting stands.

This is core to our mission. See the At-Risk Public Data Archive and our data documentation guides, which record each dataset’s provenance and limitations.

Tell the desk what disappeared, or use our secure channels for anything sensitive.
